As part of a National Geographic event in Kyoto, I directed a bilingual talk featuring Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Paul Salopek, creator of the Out of Eden Walk. His global journey retraces the path of early human migration—on foot—spanning over 38,000 km and more than a decade.
Paul shared stories that don’t make headlines: quiet moments of resilience, generosity, and wisdom from people around the world. From nomads in the Horn of Africa to farmers in Asia, each encounter offers a deeper lesson about how we live, move, and connect.
Joined by walking partner Soichiro Koriyama, Paul reflected on the silence of Japan’s countryside, and the open curiosity of its people. The event became a live editorial—a reminder that some of the most meaningful stories are found at walking speed.
